| OBJECTIVES | To assess the effect and safety of endovascular thrombectomy in conjunction with medical therapy, as compared with medical therapy alone, in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to basilar artery occlusion and an absence of a large baseline infarct on neuroimaging who underwent randomization 6 to 24 hours after symptom onset. |
| STUDY | Investigator-initiated, multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled trial with blinded outcome evaluation. |
| POPULATION | Patients from 18-80 years of age with basilar artery occlusion or intracranial segments of both vertebral arteries that could be treated within 6 to 24 hours after symptom onset, pre-stroke score of 0-1 on the modified Rankin Scale, Initial NIHSS: ≥ 10, later modified to ≥ 6 to allow higher enrollment. |
| ENDPOINTS | An original primary outcome of a score of 0 to 4 on the modified Rankin Scale was later changed to a modified Rankin Scale score of 0 to 3 (good functional status). |
