Persistent hypoglossal artery

Last update on November 3, 2020

Watch these images shared by Dr. Ameer E. Hassan (Valley Baptist Medical Center - Harlingen, Texas) to see a persistent hypoglossal artery.

Case
  • Frontal picture, lateral picture and axial MRA of this patient who presented with a posterior stroke

Axial MRA

  • On noninvasive imaging, there was no evidence of vertebral artery origins off of either subclavian
  • The patient was referred for cerebral angiogram and found to have a right vertebral artery come off of the right carotid bulb next to the right internal carotid.

...This is an excellent example of a persistent hypoglossal artery.
