The first day at ALICE in Essen unfolded with a dynamic mix of live procedures, in-depth discussions, and hands-on learning experiences, bringing together experts from around the world. The morning sessions were particularly engaging, as attendees witnessed transvenous embolizations for arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) performed live by Prof. Rene Chapot who led the procedure from Essen, while Prof. Alberto Gil conducted a similar intervention from Santander Spain. The demonstration of the technique and approaches led to an insightful exchange of ideas on optimizing treatment outcomes and refining transvenous strategies.
Later in the day, attention shifted to the treatment of aneurysms, specifically those in the cervical ICA and middle cerebral artery bifurcation. A highly interactive discussion followed, with specialists debating the advantages, limitations, and indications of various therapeutic options. Innovative devices and patient-specific management strategies were at the core of the conversation, emphasizing the importance of individualized treatment plans.
At midday, Prof. Nick Higgins delivered a lecture on venous pathology, introducing some disruptive concepts about diseases that could share a common venous aetiology.
Beyond the clinical cases, participants had the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in medical devices. The newly introduced educational space provided a hands-on experience with flow models and devices allowing attendees to test and understand different materials used in neurovascular procedures. This interactive session not only enriched theoretical knowledge but also reinforced practical applications, fostering a deeper engagement with cutting-edge technology.
As the day progressed, the focus turned to stroke management. The discussion covered essential advancements, such as the use of large-diameter catheters, emerging carotid pathology treatments, and evolving therapeutic strategies. The session concluded with a thought-provoking roundtable discussion, where experts analyzed MeVo and examined the findings from the latest clinical trials. This exchange of perspectives added a crucial layer to the understanding of stroke treatment and its ongoing evolution.
